History of the Royal Poinciana Playhouse

Crop

Royal Poinciana Playhouse 1972 models PB Life Feb 72 (2)The water-side Royal Poinciana Playhouse began 55 years ago as a producing theater.  In 1979, new ownership changed the theater premise to presenting touring shows.  In the 90’s, larger performing art centers were created to house the big musicals coming off the Broadway stages (e.g., “Phantom of the Opera”), thus affecting the Royal Poinciana theater’s business model.  By the time its lease with Clear Channel expired in 2004, its stage, equipment and total facility had been without updates for many years.  The decayed condition and inaccessibility renders it unsafe for public use.

Remaining “dark” for 10 years during a poor economy, the Royal Poinciana Playhouse fell under new plaza management by the Sterling Organization. The Sterling entity, in turn, negotiated a long-term lease with the National Arts Institute, Inc., [dba, the “Palm Beach Performing Arts Center (PBPAC)”].  PBPAC goals require major upgrade renovations, including the latest technology, to become a BROADWAY-equivalent for Palm Beach.

PBPAC ‘s high quality programs, performances and productions will offer the full experience that Palm Beach residents and other VIPs expect and deserve.
